Messiaen’s Mode 7 is one of Olivier Messiaen’s “modes of limited transposition,” described in Technique de mon langage musical (1944). This nine-note mode is an expanded chromatic-major structure that contains both diatonic and fully chromatic elements. Its sound is dense, highly colorful, and harmonically saturated, with a strong sense of internal motion while avoiding traditional tonal resolution.

    Construction and formula

Mode 7 is a nine-note collection built from a major framework enriched with both chromatic passing tones and modal alterations, creating a continuous pitch field that blends stability and chromatic complexity.

    In C: C–D♭–D–E♭–F–F♯–G–A♭–A–B.

    Interval formula: 1–♭2–2–♭3–4–♯4–5–♭6–6–7

The mode contains a full major skeleton (1–2–3–4–5–7 implied structurally) enriched with both minor and chromatic inflections. This creates a dense harmonic continuum where diatonic clarity and chromatic tension coexist without functional resolution.

    Musical usage

Mode 7 is used for extremely rich harmonic textures with high spectral density. It allows both melodic fluidity and strong internal chromatic motion, making it suitable for complex harmonic fields.

Melodically, it supports smooth scalar movement combined with frequent chromatic coloration. Harmonically, it produces extended sonorities that feel stable in color but constantly shifting in tension.

    In practice

Practice Mode 7 as a full pitch environment rather than a traditional scale, focusing on the interaction between diatonic and chromatic tones.

In improvisation, move freely between major, minor, and chromatic tones to emphasize harmonic fluidity. In composition, use it to create dense, evolving harmonic landscapes without tonal resolution.
